Standards of coaching CYFL Football

As a Coach in Columbia Youth Football League, you understand that you are a leader and a role model for players, parents, other CYFL Volunteers, and our community. CYFL expects you to create a safe enthusiastic education and, to a reasonable degree, competitive environment for all those involved. The primary goal of coaches should be the development of boys and girls to become better citizens.

As a CYFL Coach your responsibility is not to judge talent, but to discover and develop talent. The players must be taught sportsmanship and fair play, and these teachings should always govern their behavior while at practice and at games. Coaches shall be responsible for the conduct of all players, members of the coaching staff and spectators. This includes the time periods before, during and after league games and other events. Improper conduct, in the judgment of the game officials, on the part of the players, coaches or spectators may result in penalties, expulsion and suspension or forfeiture of the game. Each Coach must adhere to the spirit of the Rules and Regulations as set forth by the Board of Directors. Failure to comply has ramification, which are stated in the Code of Conduct and in the CYFL By-Laws.

CYFL believes in the three "S's" - Safety, Sportsmanship, and Scholarship and expects all coaches to promote these ideals both on and off the field.


HEAD COACH REQUIREMENTS:

  • I agree to attend at least one CYFL Coaches or Board meeting prior to the start of the season.
  • I agree to attend (or in my absence, have a representative attend) the CYFL pre-season coaches meeting.
  • I agree to develop a system to properly communicate information to players & parents in a timely fashion. (Execute a "as soon as I know, you will know" philosophy.)
  • I agree to conduct a parents meeting the first week of practice to discuss expectations, needs, concerns, equipment, etc.
  • I agree to conduct a players meeting at the first practice, to discuss expectations.
  • I agree to communicate game times/locations or any changes in a timely fashion.
  • I agree to turn in my CYFL Official Statistic sheet to the League Commissioner from a game NO LATER than the next day.
  • I agree to fulfill all scheduled CYFL responsibilities and requests fully and in a timely manner.
  • I agree to be responsible for complete Field Set-Up when my team has the first game of the day at any CYFL field.
  • I agree to be responsible for complete Field Take-Down when my team has the last game of the day at any given CYFL field.
  • I agree to leave a field litter-free after each practice/team event.
  • I agree to support my fellow CYFL Head Coaches and their staffs, and understand that any tampering with another team's players or malicious conduct toward another CYFL player, coach, parent, or team is unacceptable.

ALL COACHES REQUIREMENTS:

  • I agree to be a USA Football Head's Up certified football coach..
  • I agree to support and fulfill all team responsibilities regarding all League fund raisers if requested or required.
  • I agree to attend a coaches meeting prior to the each season. I understand that failure to attend may prevent me from being approved by the CYFL Coaches Committee to continue coaching in the current season.
  • The first word in my Coaches vocabulary should be FUN.
  • I agree to read, comprehend, and abide by the most current CYFL Tackle Rules and Regulations..
  • I agree that I am responsible for all equipment provided to me for use by CYFL and that I will return this equipment back to CYFL at the conclusion of the season.
  • I agree to provide a safe environment for my players and their families.
  • I agree to provide a positive environment for my players and their families.
  • I agree to teach fundamental skills/techniques to ensure safety and proper player development.
  • I agree to develop the skills of all players, regardless of talent, relationship, athleticism, or capabilities.
  • I agree to conduct myself as an example and in a professional manner at all times and understand that profanity, obscenity, vulgar gestures, harassment, use of alcohol, use of nicotine, use of illegal drugs, verbal abuse or physical abuse is strictly prohibited for ANY on-field volunteer.
    • Any prohibited actions by an on-field volunteer will result in CYFL Board Review and possible relief from CYFL volunteer privileges.
    • I understand that if a coach is relieved of his coaching privileges by the CYFL Board for any of the above causes there will be no appeals process.
  • I agree to teach players to play the game fairly, safely, by the rules, and in a sportsman-like manner. I understand that teaching and using unnecessarily rough or illegal tactics against an opposing player is unacceptable behavior.
  • I agree to demonstrate, emphasize, and teach good sportsmanship, fair play, and teamwork.
  • I agree to develop a means of good communication with all of my players regardless of skill level. (Discuss school, grades, hobbies…)
  • I understand that I am responsible for the actions of my players, their parents and fans during all CYFL events including but not limited to practices and games.
  • I understand that the term for the position of CYFL Coach is one season and that there are no guarantees for positions in future seasons. I understand that Head Coaches are selected by the Board of Directors prior to the beginning of a given season after all candidates are interviewed.
  • I understand that the Board of Directors will review all alleged infractions of the Code of Conduct. Depending on the seriousness or frequency, the Board may assess additional disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion from the CYFL and/or attendance to any CYFL Function.
  • I agree to report any important issues, concerns, or incidents involving players, coaches, parents, or observers to the CYFL Board Member in a timely manner so that proper action and resolution may be achieved.
